I thought I had a photo of that ball, with a split face, but I think I must have imagined it. Anyway, this is already highlighting a problem with smileys/emoji – their proportions don’t quite fit classic type. It’s still a problem today with setting them alongside regular text.

That's probably the one. And it makes sense that it would be GP, they were the most prominent (as far as I know) aftermarket typeball maker.
