yeah, the knotted rope was in use for three centuries, at least as far as the records go, but we stopped using it in the mid 19th C. we still use knots today as the unit.

I initially wanted to say "stylus" but though we no longer use clay or wax for writing, we still use the tool for various purposes.

I learned recently that fireman still use knotted ropes to navigate buildings where they can't see so they can get back out - knots are spaced out, and they also tie off different kinds of knots to denote a left or right turn. Also allows following fireman to take same path
