Mind blown, but also: If a design detail is so invisible no one knows about it, is it a failure?https://twitter.com/LipBitinANNAmal/status/1078840770864529408 …

No and yes. Communication is difficult and expensive. So we must focus on communicating what matters. At some point, it no longer pays to do the communication. And, despite the best efforts of designer, many features cannot be self evident.

Yeah. I know it’s all shades of gray. I’m interested in more metrics or vocabulary around that. If you build something that’s useful but no one uses it, how can you justify building it? Those viral tweets indicate to me there’s a mismatch somewhere.

There’s a huge problem in software that there are too many features to communicate. As a communication of innovation guy, it just can’t be done. So what are the alternatives? Not much.

I very much disagree! Maybe it’s a quality vs. quantity issue. But most of the software I use does a pretty awful job at telling me about the new (or unknown to me) things that are relevant to me.

Here’s the question: how is it supposed to do that? What communication medium?

Newsletter, notifications, menu hints, highlights, special new screen, a physical postcard sent to my address, cool videos, game-like elements, a combination of help and dashboard showing productivity savings, new things I haven’t thought of…

We know awful versions of most of these things, and reject them. But I believe this is like public transit in Europe, or vending machines or restrooms in Japan. There is a way to make good versions of these things.

Let’s separate specialty use software from mass market. In mass market, we are bombarded by instructions and only keep the absolutely essential. So the list has minimal impact. Same happens in professional work, except people are paid to use the software so more gets read.
