This bothers me! TVs are computers now. They should be able to actually detect wrong aspect ratio, I think.
I know! I mean, even analog TV could transmit information in the sideband / blanking interval. That said, I think it really depends on the cable box. In a some places people are still on legacy boxes that only have analog coax out, and their provider "squishes" everything.
Case in point, my in-laws in a small town in Wisconsin. I'm not sure what service they get, but their box is definitely not serving digital to their TV (which is the same one we have). If I fix the aspect ratio they complained that the picture is "too small" (SD)
