I found an old Sholes & Glidden document and got it scanned. I see three uses.

how is the center justification done?
You'd have to do this from a draft copy, or use random word divisions which I've seen in other old typed fully-justified documents, but this wasn't the case here. So either a hand-written draft and count carefully, or a typed draft and count it out more easily.
