Much better. Footnotes are the worst¹, kill them with fire. ¹There's no way to tell in advance if the note is valuable, so you always check. Then you have to scan back to find where you were originally reading. Inline notes at least fixes half of the problem.
Hmmm. I don’t personally find going down and back particularly tricky or unpleasant.¹² I do hate endnotes with passion for the same reason, though. ¹ At least on paper. Screens are another matter altogether. ² I would put footnote digit *after* punctuation, but that’s just me!
I find them bad UX for the same reasons they'd be bad UX on the web.
Yeah, now I’m curious how other people feel in general.
From my own observations, they tend to get a free pass when it comes to UX issues.
Sorry, I’m confused. Are we still talking about footnotes on paper? I think inlining them like above would cause other issues (why not parentheses?). Sidenotes are an interesting solution, but that works only for larger books.
I'm talking about footnotes in general. Parentheses are good for small bits of content, but if the content is longer then scanning for the resolving ) becomes much harder. --- Whereas finding the end of a block like this is much easier. ---
It’d be interesting to experiment. I wonder if e.g. half sidenotes (TM) could be better overall. (It depends on the content, too, of course.)pic.twitter.com/UZMavFSOAW
Yeah, asides work well for me. The requirements are: 1. Easy to discover supplementary content & judge if it's worthwhile. 2. Easy to return to original content after consuming supplementary content. 3. Easy to bypass supplementary content if judged unnecessary.
