I am on board with this. It is contextual, but designed to be ignorable. If this was the long-standing convention and someone then suggested the current convention, it would be clear how dumb is the current convention.
I don’t know if I’d fully go there – I can see the above solution feeling very messy the moment the body text introduces more styles – but it is indeed interesting. Funnily enough given what it is, this feels more “web-like”!

If you imagine block quotes and/or images (with captions) and/or italics and/or bullet points and/or other things in your text, introducing one more inline style for “bodynotes” might make it unbearably busy.
Makes sense. Or even ridiculously long text notes. But if, as an author, you choose to use them, in whatever fashion, and you feel it is important, they are more likely to be consumed.
I guess my thought is you're going to use them or not, and the current convention makes it more likely than not that they will be ignored, dismissed. I have a hard time believing many readers read all notes from #InfiniteJest, if any
