Unpopular opinion: If you get within 80% of pronunciation of any name, you’re good. Go to 100% if you want, but the variations and what you can learn from them are more beautiful than perfect consistency. (Is it just me…? Is it because no one says my name right, ever…?)https://twitter.com/jensimmons/status/1060768797924212736 …

It depends, I guess. Sometimes the 20% mispronunciation is rude, sometimes it isn't. There remains a kind of debate in France about how to pronounce the name of François Mitterrand: three syllables if you like him, two if you don't.

I agree you can mispronounce with disrespect, but you can *pronounce* with disrespect, too.

I personally find it pretentious to pronounce Spanish proper nouns too correctly when speaking English (at least on the radio or in a similar formal context). All you are doing is showing off. This may just be me being cranky, however.

Yes! I find it distracting myself, too.

In the US there are good political reasons to insist on the dignity of Spanish, however.
