Unpopular opinion: If you get within 80% of pronunciation of any name, you’re good. Go to 100% if you want, but the variations and what you can learn from them are more beautiful than perfect consistency. (Is it just me…? Is it because no one says my name right, ever…?)https://twitter.com/jensimmons/status/1060768797924212736 …

"Beto" is a specific cultural signifier. It's a Latino nickname. Beto is not of Latino heritage. But he grew up in a Latino town and has embraced Latino culture and has a Latino nickname. Its legitimacy became a campaign issue! So pronunciation matters. https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2018/3/7/17091094/beto-orourke-full-name-ted-cruz-controversy …

That's because you're used to a lifetime of mis-pronouciations such that it ends up being the hill you don't want to die on... every... single... day. I did my first 22 years in a country where everyone could pronounce my name to a country where everybody consistently doesn't.

Not just “used to,” I actually… enjoy people mispronouncing my name?
