It depends, I guess. Sometimes the 20% mispronunciation is rude, sometimes it isn't. There remains a kind of debate in France about how to pronounce the name of François Mitterrand: three syllables if you like him, two if you don't.

Many people in the US have all kinds of difficulty pronouncing, "Nomi" -- 2 syllables-- sounds like "Know-me." On the phone it becomes even more challenging. How do they hear, "Melanie?" (& I have problems with sequence of quotation marks, yes.)

My experience of learning Polish agrees with this - both with names and general vocabulary, so long as you actually try. When I can pronounce “Grzegorz Brzęczyszczykiewicz” I will be very happy
