You have until January 8 to upgrade to Flickr Pro or all but your latest 1,000 photos/videos will be permanently deleted. https://blog.flickr.net/en/2018/11/01/changing-flickr-free-accounts-1000-photos/ …

I understand why SmugMug is doing this, and I know that the kind of free storage Yahoo was providing isn’t tenable for an independent private company, and the likely alternative was Flickr going away. But it still bums me out.

Bums you out from a "don't want to lose my stuff" standpoint or bums you out from a "the great web doesn't want to lose this stuff" standpoint?

I’ve paid for Pro forever, so it doesn’t impact my 14k photos directly—for now. More sad about the deleted history, broken links/embeds, and friends whose earliest photos will be lost because they can’t pay or are no longer with us.

Yeah. I was thinking the same thing. What if @Flickr just demoted the ones that it wants deleted to a very low resolution? At least there would be link continuity, some context, and at least some possibility to recover if you arrive at that page.

I hope they’re not *actually* deleting anything and will allow restoring archives, like Flickr used to do for Flickr Pro before the 1TB change. Even better: allow others to pay for Pro on someone else’s behalf for those who can’t afford it or have passed away.

Many many years ago, Flickr allowed someone to pay for someone else's account (I was the recipient of such a gift a few times). Not sure if that ability still exists.

I paid for Pro for a long time, but stopped when I no longer needed what it offered. But I find it surprising that I'm going to lose that archive of photos when I use so little of my quota 0.58%pic.twitter.com/4iXtU6HN0r
