@brian_d_vaughn, @ojanvafai, @graynorton, @chrishtr and @domenic are designing that. With a little assist from some folks at twitter who know a thing or two about virtual scrolling. ;) Send me all your weird use cases or examples of scrollers we should take into account!

Yup, that’s the one. It sounds like the desired behavior is not to see content visibly refetch/rerender when you come back to them? Anything else?

I’m so excited for this. Here are some considerations I have when designing that kind of stuff: a) is it possible to design it so it fires loading new items at the right distance, so it feels smooth and you never bounce off of the bottom edge

      b) is it possible to have a (subtle) loading indicator c) is it possible to have an “end of stream” indicator

      d) if things go wrong/slow connection, is there an error message? Can I retry manually without reloading the whole page?

      e) if reloading, navigating, can I arrive at the exact same position? (same as above) f) if things are added above and below, can the thing I’m looking at never move (scroll position gets adjusted for reflow)

      g) Bigger design question: Is there a way to indicate those things in scroll bars? Historical scroll bars are somewhat poorly equipped to handle virtual content.

(Example: how can I quickly scroll down somewhere far without needing to wait for everything intermediate to load… but also without the scroll elevator being tiny.)

      h) Keyboard access etc. should work well, too. :·) Opportunity for new shortcuts? (e.g. “jump tot he very end”)

      i) Lastly, going far down in a stream can sometimes represent work. How can I make sure that that work is not wasted if e.g. the tab crashes and needs reload. I guess support for URL fragments maybe?

One more thing! You know sometimes how there’s this frustrating interaction where you go to the bottom and the loading doesn’t kick in and you have to jiggle it or go up and down again… that would be amazing to not inflict on visitors, ever. :·)
