I’m perplexed when restaurants do this. Does this work? Why not recommend just one tip value?pic.twitter.com/d887LTPl4K

Ha, pretty sure it's supposed to calculate the tip amount next to each of those percentages. I've never seen a receipt with just the percentages alone.

printing out the actual calculated values would be useful, at least

What I normally see is each percentage with the $$ value based on your meal next to it, so you don't have to do the math.

Typically it is accompanied to the right of the percentages by the dollar amount that corresponds to the different common tip percentages. Some people tip variably based on perceived service.

It works when the dollar amounts are calculated.

That would be like Starbucks selling just one type of coffee, or providing all types of coffee at the same price. The marginal cost is largely the same to starbucks but you want charge the maximum thing a person is willing to pay.

Generally a range of 15-20% is acceptable. 15% is mediocre service, 20% is great. 21+% means that service was just the best you’ve ever had.

Assuming this is correct (and I think it might not be everywhere, and default to tipping 20%+ always, but that’s another conversation), why do you think they’re not explaining this alongside like you just did?

Possibly same psychology as the wine list by price ascending (2nd cheapest bottle is the frequent winner). Tip % ‘persuades’ you to #2, and most folk will round up for a simple calc

Without the calculated amounts in $, that could be the reason.
