If you look at a serious etymological ref. like the OED you get a lot more information. You see evolved as "motor car" in 1895, and before that "motor car" was a railway car with its own source of power. Not so different from "oleo locomotive" after all but easier to say

But why "motor car" and not "motor wagon" or similar? Is there any better answer than "nobody knows"?
