This 1959 electric Royal HP with a cantilevered keyboard is so rare it’s impossible to find photos of it. But I confirmed it *does* exist. (The two keys on each side of the spacebar are down arrow and right arrow, effectively.)pic.twitter.com/byuoTlOZKv

One of the great thing about computers is that their evolution was so much more complex and fascinating than just “let’s add a screen to a typewriter.” On an unrelated note, here’s Olivetti ETV 240/250/260, a typewriter with a screen added to it.pic.twitter.com/mavLMZd5Fg

This was likely really awful to type on, but this is the most helveticaest of all the keyboards. (A Hungarian 1980s home computer called Homelab 2, or Aircomp 16.)pic.twitter.com/SngEoD1Ym3

This is a generic 1970s IBM terminal keyboard, but the way this photo portrays it makes it so attractive. (Also, a really early example of filling out all the space around spacebar with keys.)pic.twitter.com/dsc1W5BHmG

A special blinged out edition of Royal Quiet De Luxe from 1949. “The gold-plated machine was produced in a limited edition and sold at a considerable price. Apparently, one of them was owned by author Ian Fleming.”pic.twitter.com/Pk4MIA1mw6

Yet Another Olivetti, this time a “wedge” from the last generation of typewriters – but also the most incredible typewriter carrying case I’ve ever seen.pic.twitter.com/YwOPQIn0Zv

Suggestion from @aslakr: A Tandberg Data keyboard from Norway, also from the year 1980 – but looking forward instead of back. (It comes with a rainbow, too.)pic.twitter.com/31c4AHiIaa

The Japanese OASYS machines came with beautiful keyboards and enclosures. (Note how the keyboards are split visually to guide the respective hand – and also the extra two keys below the short spacebar(s), meant to be pressed with your thumbs.)pic.twitter.com/OEQppQkhBu

The keyboard of the early IBM 610 calculator from 1950s: Staggered keys, long space-like zero, and a 2" CRT that wasn’t good enough to display fonts so it only displayed dots instead.pic.twitter.com/D0rIS3aezz

A pair of today’s keyboards that recreate a 1970s key profile in a modern setting. Those key contours just feel gorgeous to me. (I saw the second one in person in Japan, and it floored me.) I saw DJswayde's HHKBs with those Hi-Pro keycaps at the MKE meetup this summer. Incredible boards!! https://i.imgur.com/bO0eg11.jpg  Sliders were lubed and I think he had BKE domes in it as well. Felt sooo good to type on.

Equally fascinating is that each of those sheet metal pieces had to be die-cut. No lasers or water jets!
