Yikes. The dreaded moment finally happened. My keyboard research led me to Fox News. :·/ This is a piece on the “keyboard for blondes”, from about a decade ago. You don’t have to watch it.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PYury2tB4G4 …

Keyboard For Blondes was an actual product, clad in pink, and filled with some pretty bad jokes. It apparently also made sounds: “musical notes on the number keys,” “oops” if you tap backspace, and cash register sound whenever you pressed $.pic.twitter.com/1PDTum49sU

The website can still be accessed online. It has a Flash intro with a catchy tune, which I recorded here. There are other pages, too; it’s a pretty elaborate production. “People think it’s a novelty gift and then they get totally addicted to this revolutionary breakthrough in keyboard fun,” claimed the spokesperson. It could have been yours for only $49.95.

Weirdly enough, it even made it to Russia. (The historian in me would very much love a Russian copy of that keyboard. It seems like such an eerie entity.)pic.twitter.com/P76NvkT1oe

The joke’s partly on the creators, of course: A keyboard with keys such as Yes, No, or Eraser would actually be friendlier to everybody. And function keys *are* indeed generally useless.

Nota bene: In early 2000s, there was another novelty keyboard, with even more suspect gender politics. It was called Guy’s Keyboard. Here’s their preserved website. Enter at your own risk: https://web.archive.org/web/20020119162325/http://guyskeyboard.com …

I loved their claim that “after 127 years of inertia, the Guy’s Keyboard may be the first successful competitor to the sometimes hated Qwerty keyboard.” (Narrator: It wasn’t.)
