Vicki Boykis added,
We’re worse at reading all caps words; I think having the keywords in lowercase or title case might work better (particularly since syntax highlighting is still in place).
Disagree. I personally like seeing the caps for keywords (http://veekaybee.github.io/2015/06/02/good-sql/ …), but I'd love to read a take arguing the other way, too.
There’s a big body of evidence that reading lowercase is faster than uppercase – some theories point to more varied word shapes helping out, but it seems it could be as simple as: we just read more lowercase, so we’re better at it. E.g. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/typography/develop/word-recognition …
The case of SQL, I bet it’s more complex than regular text, for example the rhythm and contrast of different parts of query might also be a signal… (and uppercase text is *darker*), but that’s why I thought depending on colour could still preserve that.
Alas, in the link you said the person only states “it’s easier to read all uppercase,” which studies don’t agree on the face value – and if it’s more specific than that, unfortunately the author didn’t elaborate.
(Ugh, sorry for all the bad grammar and typos.)
