I really like this aspect of design Twitter: 😮 @vanschneider says something provocative that he genuinely believes 🤨 @DannPetty @jessicahische @HoeflerCo and others disagree passionately 😲 strong opinions get voiced 🤔 all of us get a deeper perspective on the issue 💕 https://twitter.com/vanschneider/status/1025819193973923843 …

Imagine the deeper perspective we could all have if the topic was intially approached with finesse, empathy, and humility instead of brash overarching statements the require people to correct them 🤔

I have mixed feelings about this. Of course nuance, empathy, and humility are all valuable. Raw and opinionated statements are useful too — when people post clear (even brash) opinions on Twitter, I know where they stand and can bounce my own viewpoints against their statements.

This is the Twitter equivalent of a meeting being dominated by a white guy with a loud voice. We need to be better than this.

You don’t have to choose between empathy and candor. You can have both.

I had a breakthrough one day when I realized what he’s doing is actually really, really easy. It’s level 1 of discourse.

Imagine saying what he said without making freelancers who go to networking events feel like losers. That’s harder.

Imagine saying what he said making room for different kinds of freelancers to exist in the design world. That’s harder.

Imagine saying this in a way that enables everyone to engage in a conversation, not just people of a similar personality/position as you. That’s harder.

Imagine adding all of this subtlety and still expressing things in a way that allows them to be easily graspable and travel far. That’s really, really hard.

Now imagine trying to do this without the added benefit of many people being conditioned to see your aggressiveness as passion, and your brashness as confidence.

TIL there are YouTube comments about my recent talk "Even More CSS Secrets", and they seem to reach a consensus that apparently it's a great talk, but my voice is insufferably high-pitched.
