Are there any historians of typewriters out there? I've found reference (in a Budapest newspaper of 1933) to an Oliver typewriter factory in Manchester in 1894, but Oliver seems to have been a US firm founded a year later. Any ideas? Thanks.

Alternatively, are there any online directories of Manchester in 1894 I could check? Any help enormously appreciated.

Hmmm. I wonder if the popularity of Oliver, after a 40-year gap, led to a slippage of memory (or whether the journalist misheard), and it was actually Gardner's: the employee in question refers to it going out of business - https://oztypewriter.blogspot.com/2015/01/who-was-john-gardner-typewriter.html …

That typewriter blog, by Robert Messenger, incidentally, is a genuinely brilliant bit of research and far more interesting than I would have imagined possible.

A bunch of people sent me your way and I’m not sure how far you’ve gotten (and I’m not really an expert), but this might be useful: https://etconline.org/backissues/ETC064.pdf …

That's very kind, thanks. My suspicion is that an error has slipped into the 1933 interview (whether through interviewee's memory lapse or journalistic assumption) and that Gardner's is meant rather than Oliver's (especially as he refers to it going out of business soon after).
