Book idea: User interfaces for various modes of transportation: cars, trains, planes, buses. Not just pretty pictures, but also principles of operation, good stories, and – most importantly? – hacks and conventions. I'd love to read that, actually! If you're interested in that sort of thing, I could show you a German tram from the early 1950s tomorrow. Just gotta take a few photos before.

After the second world war, tram companies in Germany desperately needed new rolling stock, so first of all "new" trams were built by putting new bodies onto the chassis of old trams damaged in the war.

The first all-new trams used that same kind of body, except on a brand new chassis. These were called "Verbandswagen", because it was built to the specifications of the German association (=Verband) of transit companies.

This tram is a Verbandswagen. It was built in 1954 by Credé in Kassel for the tram in Frankfurt am Main. 65 motor cars and 122 trailers were built for Frankfurt, many more for other cities.

The last ones were supposed to be decommissioned in 1977, but four motor cars and six trailers survived as the "Ebbelwei-Expreß" - a heritage line running on the weekends, a round trip through Frankfurt, with music, pretzels and applewine.

These trams are fairly unique because they've been in service for 64 years now without ever having been decommissioned.

Also, they require a conductor for security reasons. I work as a conductor on the weekends, so I know these trains inside and out. I'll just need to take a few pictures tomorrow!
