Do you know what those reasons are…? I remember reading that early fly-by-wire planes had backup manual controls, but that actually made them *less* safe overall.
The thing about trains is that, because they can't leave their tracks, in a dangerous situation it's usually the best idea to just slam the brakes on as hard as you can. For the same reason, a train you can't stop is a horrible nightmare.
The air brake has a continuous air line running through the entire train, and the brakes will go on if pressure in that airline decreases. That valve can open up the air line so you can still stop a train even when all else fails.
