It makes perfect sense though! And they have started thinking of the cab in that way since, but back then they'd mostly be trying to find some space for all these levers to go.
After they introduced pedals, train drivers quickly discovered they could just put their bags on the pedals and forget about it. So what you have nowadays is either a pedal that you have to push down, but not all the way, or a pedal you have to release periodically.
Aaaaaah.
The first kind will brake the train if you release it or push it down too hard, the second kind if you release it or push it down for too long.
