I mean, I know the answer is “it depends.” I just think text editing could be so much more fun and pleasant in some circumstances.
I have never seen this approach before, although I am sure it must have happened.

If it were not the default and/or only option, no. I can see a use for this.

It looks very cool, but I feel like it would get really old really fast.

Yeah, but that’s sort of universally true for transitions and can be solved easily by ramping it up to ~100ms after a few uses.

I like the idea of a more fun text editor. I use iaWriter and love useful visual tweaks like focus mode. This really emphasises how the space between words changes - I wonder what other animation could be useful!

Useful? Probably not. Playful? Definitely. Useful by proxy as a result? Probably. I don't see the harm in it, you don't switch alignment every 2 minutes, in the right kind of app, this could be nice.

I wonder if it could be actually useful in some cases: making it easier to understand the relationships when you’re learning or when this is applied to other types of alignment (e.g. hyphenation or when non-text objects are involved) or when the text disappears off screen.

Gotta waste the massive compute power of my new and shiny computer somewhere, so that I will find myself forced to upgrade in another 7 years from now, even if the hardware (and battery) are still going strong.

You can look at the code, I hope it’s not too hard to understand. It’s not mathematically very complex, although it is a *huge* pain in the ass to do.
