fascinating. I often think about how this evolution affected games and the ergonomics on navigating a virtual world (videogames are my profession) using peripherals that were never explicitly designed for it. ie: mouse and keyboard, the tools of the spreadsheet & word processor

Oh yeah, there are some fascinating artifacts along the way. This is for you if you haven’t seen it yet:pic.twitter.com/lzvuyBF71H

What blew my mind is that we are now literally getting keyboards for playing games in consoles, e.g.https://www.polygon.com/2015/7/27/9045611/hori-delivers-ps4-keyboard-mouse-controller-in-time-for-black-ops-3 …

Which is sort of the opposite of what was happening in the 1980s:https://tedium.co/2017/04/27/video-games-keyboards-intellivision/ …

One of my favourite artifacts is this, where arrow keys were basically extra:pic.twitter.com/r4S6nywARo

The evolution and experimentation with arrow key layouts is at least something that we got that we never quite did with QWERTY, at least not in production.pic.twitter.com/MIbAbgFFUt

Sorry, I just offloaded a lot of stuff at you. It’s an endlessly interesting subject for me.

its alright, this is all fascinating stuff. what is funniest to me, not sure how familiar you are with modern games, but despite all of the effort manufacturers went though, to make the arrow pad usable for "games", we ditched it in 1996 for WASD

the arrow keys and the mouse were too close together, its an unnatural resting position for the arms. I believe WASD was chosen for the left hand because it closely mimics the shape of the arrow "T" while still having easy access to number keys and spacebar (Jump in most games)
