I love the longpress feature for adding "Umlaute", but it still feels too slow. It would be amazing if in those cases the letter would work as a modifier key:
pressing u and 2 = ü
pressing a and 4 = ä

I am actually curious why Apple went with 1, 2, 3… instead of using letters matching the already existing Alt dead key combinations. U for umlaut, tilde for grave etc.
I think partly because it's inspired by the iOS layout. But conceptually it makes sense: 'base character first, modifier later'. This makes a lot of sense across a lot of different languages. àáääæããå are all reachable on the Mac through: longpress "a" + number.
It might be weird, that you add the 'Umlaut' ' ¨ ' for the 'a' on the 2 and for the 'u' on the 4. But I think the brain will 'save' 'ü' as a combination of 'u + 2' and not as ' ¨ + u '. Just two different mindsets: character or modifier first.
