The Medium text editor is top notch. The one thing that's jarring to me is the blinking cursor. Lots of software does this, what's the motivation? Has any UX person studied blinking?

It’s a good question. Medium in particular just inherits whatever the browser does in that case, and browsers don’t offer any control. I wonder if designers behind Google Docs might know more: they actually invented/designed their own cursors.

I remember some (IBM?) terminals had a keyboard key to turn blinking on and off. Maybe they did some research, since that key no longer exists.

Here’s a not from my research. Book “Visual display terminals: Ergonomics,” page 122. Can look into this more if it’s interesting.pic.twitter.com/eSMjsz5hXP

Sounds like a fascinating book, I'm looking forward to reading it. Speaking of keyboards, I really enjoyed

Thanks, yeah, it was a great read! It inspired me to put together this little gizmo: https://aresluna.org/keyboard-secrets/typing-delay/ … Was thinking of sending it along my newsletter and “wisdom of the crowds”-ing an average number where typing becomes too slow.
