May I offer criticism? You draw parallels between 3D Touch and clicking, but to me I feel the more proper comparison would be 3D Touch and *right* clicking.

Not saying they’re exactly alike, and 3D Touch is indeed problematic… but I think right-clicking and 3D Touch occupy a similar conceptual space, and the limited discoverability is an intentional part of the design of both.

I disagree... I think the related thing to “Right Click” on mobile devices is “Long Tap”. Think about copying-pasting text.

It feels tricky to me. Long press is long, but 3D Touch feels… physically unpleasant. Apple seems to be admitting they are very/too close in the HIG: https://developer.apple.com/design/human-interface-guidelines/ios/user-interaction/3d-touch/ …pic.twitter.com/cThO1NnXhf

When I think about “Right Click” I think about additional options I can have. This is the same for text selection on iOS and the menu it presents. This looks and feels like a right click to me, whereas 3D Touch is a whole new thing in my mind.pic.twitter.com/3mT5gFoW63

They do look similar, but Apple deliberately states in the HIG right click menus should not have any new functions that are unavailable in the regular menus (see link). Which is how they’ve been treating 3D Touch too, I believe – at least so far. https://developer.apple.com/design/human-interface-guidelines/macos/menus/contextual-menus/ …

The selection menu in iOS is… it sort of feels to me at the same level of availability/discoverability/pro-user-ness as menu bar in the Mac OS maybe? It’s hidden more than basic taps, but much more upfront than 3D Touch/right click/keyboard shortcuts.

It is fascinating to think through, though! I see your proposal as something conceptually similar to this I just put together – arguably useful, but to me the balance between discoverability, usefulness, and noise feels off here.pic.twitter.com/EDZZiYudPb

(But I do think Mac OS does a bad job teaching about keyboard shortcuts just as I agree iOS does a bad job at teaching about 3D Touch today.)
