May I offer criticism? You draw parallels between 3D Touch and clicking, but to me I feel the more proper comparison would be 3D Touch and *right* clicking.

Not saying they’re exactly alike, and 3D Touch is indeed problematic… but I think right-clicking and 3D Touch occupy a similar conceptual space, and the limited discoverability is an intentional part of the design of both.

I disagree... I think the related thing to “Right Click” on mobile devices is “Long Tap”. Think about copying-pasting text.

To me 3D Touch, Right Click, and Long Press are similar in the sense that you can live your life very well without knowing any of them. Even personal hotspot and airdrop examples you cite still have their “first” homes elsewhere.

(For an interesting exception, select/copy/paste when it’s *really* needed – while writing or editing – is just a tap away. A short one. :·) )

I think you’re right, but that’s just bad design on part of whoever makes them. Apple explicitly says one shouldn’t do that: https://developer.apple.com/design/human-interface-guidelines/macos/menus/contextual-menus/ …

I like your analogy to keyboard shortcuts. The interesting difference is that every keyboard shortcut is different, but every 3D Touch is the same – and therefore discoverability challenges can be very different.
