I need to retype the hex of my first bitmap font and see what it looked likepic.twitter.com/LYot9X9Tr2
I OCR'd it and converted from hex to dec so it'd work with my spreadsheet. Here ya go.pic.twitter.com/AVAKeUfVqt
Oh my god, that is amazing.
@enf can we get a director’s commentary? :·)
OK! The reason I have this printout is that this font was part of my 5th grade science fair project, "Little letters: Do they matter?" The experiment was: can people read lists of words faster in capital or lower case letters?pic.twitter.com/MMReYuxXvF
The font was critical to the experiment, because the TI-99/4A built-in font only had caps and small caps, no lower case. What I don't know is whether I made the font for the sake of the experiment, or whether the font suggested the idea for the experiment
A few months ago I typed in most of the program, as the only surviving evidence of what I had learned about programming by that time. https://github.com/ericfischer/learning-to-program/blob/master/1984-science-fair-reading-speed/sciencefair.txt … It's as bad as you would expect from a fifth-grader. I spent most of the code on sound and animation for the title screen
There is also an open source story here, because I tried to donate the code for the font (in both BASIC and Extended BASIC forms) to the local TI user's group. I have no idea whether it ever actually made it into any of their software collections.pic.twitter.com/R6o9y5uKXp
Looking now at the font itself: C, G, and S seem mismatched to the rest. The middle bars are too high on the 4 and A; the W is too square; _ is too high and the tail of the t too low. The thick Apple ][-style brackets are a surprise. The punctuation is probably too heavy overall
Thank you @Bitterman59 for reviving this artifact from my ancient past!
K, 4, and n are really good. Thanks for sharing all this!
