Man alive, I use *way* too many italics in the first drafts of my books. It think fully 5% of this book is italicized. It's like it's 1985 and I just got my first WYSIWYG word processor and I'm out of control.

That’s… but that’s not bad, right? I wonder what my percentage is like now.

I think it might be bad! It looks sort of ... unconfident, in a way. Like I don't trust my deployment of language alone to make my point.

Like an equivalent of a lens flare in movies? Sometimes I worry about mine for the same reason. Sometimes I think they just match my speaking style. :·)

(I also started overusing ellipses for pauses. Thanks for giving me ideas to do more analysis of my writing!)

Don’t go full Ludlum. He had at least one italicised word per page, often more. Go to one of his books on Amazon, “Look Inside”, then “Surprise Me”. It will.

I believe I may have out-Ludlumed Ludlum in my first book. It was kind of unruly.

I assume we’re talking about italics for emphasis, and not titles or loan words?
