…and there’s really not much validity to it. The quoted Smithsonian Mag regurgitated a paper that has a lot of speculation, but not much to back it up.
“They conclude that the mechanics of the typewriter did not influence the keyboard design.”
Too bad other papers arrived since that mathematically prove that it did. 
BTW at this point, just talking about the theories behind Dvorak and QWERTY and different people taking sides and fighting with one another is a much more fascinating spectacle than the mysteries behind Dvorak/QWERTY themselves. :·)
“why are E and R adjacent, when "ER" is one of the most commonly used letter combinations in the English language?” is also a problematic statement. E and R might be adjacent on the keyboard, but not where typebars are, which is what matters for collisions.
