A few thoughtful tweets about recognizing and communicating success arrived in my timeline, and I thought I’d highlight and connect them all. 1.https://twitter.com/jacobian/status/1002295846107365376 …

I used to complain about getting hit up by recruiters so often. A friend gently pointed out that this isn’t a good look. People in other fields (and underrepresented folks in ours) wish they had this “problem”. I was grateful for the nudge; perhaps you might be, too.

Pro tip: when you’re good at what you do false modesty is pretty insulting to folks that are your junior. i.e. if my boss shrugs off being good at something then that must mean I’m just *terrible*.

Here’s something that’s hard for me to talk about: I could conceivably make an argument that at certain things I can do, I’m likely among the best in the world (and I believe this would be something objectively true, and not just my ego blowing things out of proportion).

It’s something I should be proud of, right? Maybe some of those things are *highly* specific and non-marketable, but still – it’s kind of an incredible realization. I worked hard on mastering those things, and I try to put them to good/noble use.

(And I feel incredibly lucky that I know many people, and consider some friends, that I could point to and say very similar things!)

But also, it sort of… doesn’t matter. Right next to whatever’s the shape of that feeling, there is still a much bigger feeling that‘s a combination of Impostor Syndrome and You’re Not Worth All That Much.

That those things can coexist is fascinating – and frustrating. Those are my demons to fight with. But there are moments that I have to put them aside, and acknowledge that I know certain things, that I’m *good* at certain things – even if in my head those words feels insincere.

Knowing when to mention the demons and when to pretend they’ve never been there has been an ongoing challenge, and those three tweets helped me to put things in perspective. If there are other pieces of writing you’ve found that talk about it, please let me know! (/cc @anxymag)
