I have been saying for awhile that encryption protections were going to be linked to the public's trust in the technology sector. But I didn't expect the link to be this brazen

This quote is priceless: "Laws have to determine what’s legal, but you can’t ban technology. Sure, that might lead to a dystopian future or something, but you can’t ban it."

[Facepalm] I'm one of the few people who thinks that "# of encrypted phones in police custody" is irrelevant to the crypto wars. But if *you* bring it up, then fine: publish detailed data showing how often encryption forms an impassable obstruction to an investigation.

This is a big deal for the crypto wars. My hypothesis: if we see trust in law enforcement ≫ trust in technology (companies), then big changes in encryption policy will soon follow.

17/ So we are far from declaring victory, but we also need to stop saying that voters can't verify their ballots. They can. Even without a slate. They need to be nudged / given the opportunity to actually look. When they look, they find errors. Even in elections with zero stakes.

This is the strangest privacy argument I have ever read. "All societies have had one person in history who was truly evil, whereas ad-tech is only somewhat evil. So unless you are willing to shun human civilization and live as a hermit, you cannot criticize ad-tech."

Pet peeve: when large tech companies claim to oppose a regulation because it will harm competition from startups. Don't fall for it. This trope is common when discussing privacy regulations, which actually limit large companies from leveraging their data to keep their edge (2/2)

Excellent work by to improve public safety. The work also shows that regulation of bad content on the Internet is possible while still allowing "more competition for the Internet giants." Regulation can spur free market solutions to important problems. (1/2)

If the password is subject to a FOIA request, then it isn't secure no matter what sequence they chose.

Strongly agreed. If a viable solution to the exceptional access problem exists, it will almost certainly use additional techniques to validate and limit LE actions. One major reason why and I wrote the crumple zones paper was to promote the search for other options.

The needs a better fact-checker. DNI is one of the few intelligence jobs that Michael Hayden has *not* ever held

This is the kind of question you announce to the cryptographers at the department holiday party when you want them to leave you alone. They will go into a corner and mumble to themselves for the rest of the evening.

As tech surveillance of American schoolchildren expands rapidly, one school district is making tech companies delete their data on kids once a year. It happens to be a school district where employees of the CIA and NSA send their kids:

An interesting read. "Rather than referring to 'social good,' computer scientists should more explicitly consider and articulate the normative commitments behind their work (whatever they may be)."
