besides the obvious artistic style differences, the way caravaggio's judith is a reluctant, fair nymphet all in white with her nipples poking through her dress is such a stark contrast to gentileschi's brutal murderess getting the job done

and caravaggio's abra, judith's maid is an old, witchy, manipulative looking crone, over judith's shoulder as if shes provoking her, while in gentileschi's judith and abra are clearly equal co-conspirators-- that "you hold him while i take his head off" dynamic

because it's been replied to and quoted with this story a lot, I feel the need to say that gentileschi did not paint this depicting her and another victim beheading her rapist. gentileschi WAS raped by her art teacher but it was after the painting of this piece.

i kind of take umbrage at the idea that this painting was made to depict her beheading her own rapist because it feels like it's giving the credit for this amazing piece to a very traumatic event in her life. gentileschi painted women in dire circumstances, depicting them as

she was raped by her art teacher in the middle of painting this, and it became a very long drawn out legal thing where she was almost forced to marry him. because he was also a well known painter at the time, the event overshadowed and hurt her career for the rest of her life
