Every time I reread something by Francisco Varela it makes me sad that he is no longer around. The pragmatics of his approach to understanding 'mind' are so intuitively satisfying to me that it makes me wonder how much more impactful they would have become had he had more time.

48 students registered so far for my mindfulness for musicians class at . Remarkable growth in enrollment over the last three years considering the dearth of electives and space available in students' schedules.

So much truth here. Personally, I feel a shift every three or four years that propels me to learn new methods, explore other disciplines, refine and criticize my own thinking and work, and so on. Leaning into this rather than avoiding it has made me much more satisfied.

2/2 Feel like I've read 500 page books that don't do as good a job as this short verse at capturing a very subtle point about consciousness.

1/2 Verse from the 40th koan of the Blue Cliff Record, "Perception and cognition are not single units; mountains and rivers are not viewed in a mirror. When the moon's gone down in the frosty sky, the night half over, with whom will it case a reflection, cold in the clear pool?"

"I felt the breath in my stomach go in and out. Then, I noticed my thoughts, and they said 'why are humans here', 'what is life about'?" - My six year old, after a short "just notice" mindfulness session with me tonight. No prompts other than 'notice' were given!

The most consistently reported experience among the educators I work with on mindful teaching is that they are kinder to themselves and therefore to their students. This matters and inspires me to keep at it, despite the increasing cynicism and skepticism targeting the field.

New paper with colleagues Jason Silveira and Katherine Strand using a phenomenological matrix to explore musicians' formal meditation experiences. First time we've tried something like this on an open source format. via

"We should know that, [for a fish] water is life, [for a bird] sky is life. A bird is life; a fish is life. Life is a bird; life is a fish. And we should go beyond this. There is practice/enlightenment, and this is the way of living beings." - Dogen

Pre-semester course prep koan – there are probably lots of good ways of doing the thing you think there is only one way to do. Your students and your sanity will appreciate it.

Our aesthetic sensibilities are a feature and not a bug of human experience. A science that is comfortable with that retains meaningful explanatory powers while reclaiming its origins as a vehicle for awe. Rediscovering this has been significant for me as an academic.

Academics sometimes forget that peer-review isn't necessarily a good strategy for how they choose to live a meaningful life.
