After watching Crazy Rich Asians, one of the most disturbing parts is Awkwafina’s mistral-esque performance as the “sassy Black sidekick” caricature in full on AAVE. She isn’t even acting. She’s just performing her real-life Blackface that she built her whole career off of.

Awkwafina has built her ENTIRE career off of Blackness—her "rap," her roles in Oceans 8 & CRA, her image are ALL minstrel affectations of Black American culture, music, & dress. She monetizes performing Blackness—to be rewarded for Black culture in a way that Black ppl are not.pic.twitter.com/H5Ymi0XVZj

She's so successful off reaping Blackness bc AsAms feel we either have to be the model minority "nerd" stereotype OR act black to be "radical" & defy the stereotype. We struggle to form a truly unique and cohesive identity outside of Blackness and whiteness' stereotype of us.

Asian Americans like Awkwafina bc her hyper-aggressive mimicking of Blackness (she can't even pose w/o a "fierce gangsta" pose) satisfies a yearning to "break" the model minority—to take on Blackness in order to defy the "nerd" stereotype and be seen as fully human by whiteness.pic.twitter.com/vd3Mwv0qgc

For those saying Awkwafina naturally speaks in AAVE bc she's from Queens to spin her Blackface as "authentic." Her normal voice sounds NOTHING like how she is in Oceans, CRA & as her Awkwafina persona. She's not codeswitching—she's faking AAVE to play minstrel Black caricatures.pic.twitter.com/00lXM5sOcD

P.S. For the many of you defending Awkwafina saying bc she grew up around a lot of Black ppl (which she DIDN'T cause Forrest Hills is 2.5% Black) she gets to profit off of Blackness—see my thread from a while ago on her and Eddie Huang (who is trash):https://twitter.com/muqingmzhang/status/998342509267845120 …

On Asian Americans who "authentically" exploit Black Am culture—non-black AsAms who truly grew up in Black/Latinx neighborhoods & organically absorbed Black Am aesthetic—still do not get a pass to go on and build their entire life's work & wealth off of leeching Black culture. pic.twitter.com/1xJrQTqF4j

I liked the character and her comedic performance, but I remembered there's a film she did with Alexandra Shipp where Awkwafina doesn't even have a Queens accent. To me it was "regular", so the use of AAVE in CRA does come across as slightly off to me.

Code switching is the change of dialect or style during certain settings, no? I'm looking at informal interviews and that blaccent is no where to be found. Only when performing which is kinda sketch. Like Iggy Azalea sketch....

Iggy is from Australia. Awkwafina is from Queens NY. I disagree with bringing up Iggy at all to make your point.

I was referencing speech changes during interviews to performance. That's why I brought up Iggy.

So my point is, if she grew up in Queens surrounded by people with a certain dialect how tf is it wrong the way she speaks like ik she speaks differently during interviews but wouldn't we all especially if we are more conscious and trying to idk seem more formal ?

I'll say it out right this is making me think whether or not I'm appropriating other cultures by having the same accent and dialect. Confused af man someone help me get through this

Hey, here's the thing. It's totally fine if a person speaks with a certain accent because of where they grew up and naturally taking on the accent/way of speak. The issue arises if either: a person is *faking* an accent OR

An issue arises when a non-black person isn't necessarily faking a more AAVE way of speaking (they actually speak that way naturally) BUT they're building their entire wealth and career off of AAVE in a way that Black people can not bc Black people are shamed for AAVE.

I’d also like to point out she isn’t playing up a natural Queens accent. Queens accents and AAVE aren’t necessarily interchangeable though there are crossovers.
