But the fact is there is no mention of FGM in the Quran. There is no mention of this being done to the Holy Prophets wives and daughters. It is much later that this prevalent cultural practice was given an islamic connotation

Our religious leaders tell the community that cutting the clitoral hood is required and it’s very hard to refuse or question powerful authority figures. There is a risk of social shunning.

There is already resistance from the religious leaders - what about the in-community resistance from the women themselves?

That is the greater challenge I feel, the resistance from the women. If the women understand that it is harmful for their daughters, it will be huge victory. But their belief in the leaders is so strong that it is difficult to make them understand

Its great that it has not harmed you. But it has harmed so many women, and you never know your daughter might be one of them. I know as a mother you want the best for your daughter, then why take such an irreversible risk?

Please advise these women to approach the community so they can find out what happened and how they have been hurt if so

That's exactly what we are saying, let's not impose our choice of circumcision. A 7 year old child is not old enough to consent. Therefore let your child take a decision when she grows up and is old enough

Will you say the same for Male circumcision? Or ear piercing? Or the choice of school made by the parents? Of the language forced upon the child by the parents? Not at all. Consent is only singled out for female circumcision. Fantastic logic.

Female circumcision cannot be compared to the choice of school etc. It involves cutting of the most intimate part of a person. It is an irreversible damage. The ones you mentioned aren't.
