/10: One of the most *personally* impactful things I ever built was @MorningPics (shut down last year bc Instagram API changes). It was a simple web-app that emailed the user one of their old photos every morning.pic.twitter.com/LcCfO1GbBj

/10: I launched it with a waitlist (bc importing photos took a long time) and the classic “share to get in sooner” button. It worked. Instagram early adopters / investors loved it, and many influencers I didn't know at the time signed up.https://twitter.com/kevinrose/status/68830450268909569 …

/10: I was new to the Bay Area, but this made me instantly relevant when I met people, since many people passively interacted with this service every day. It’s remarkably easier to meet people when they’ve used something you built.
/10: Example, when I met @sacca, I wasn’t some random entrepreneur looking for money/advice. I was the guy who’d built a service he and his wife got value from daily.
That relationship still exists (and he included MP in his "What Twitter can be" post).https://lowercasecapital.com/2015/06/03/what-twitter-can-be-2/ …
/10: This happened with a ton of people, and TechCrunch noticed.https://techcrunch.com/2011/06/22/morningpics-sends-you-an-instagram-from-the-past-every-morning/ …
/10: I’d never had a project I built written about on TechCrunch. I got to know the people over there and went on to author a bunch of my own articles for the site. This led to a lot more high value relationships.https://techcrunch.com/author/brenden-mulligan/ …
/10: MorningPics also led to the beginning of my working relationship with @taylorhughes, who advised as I stumbled my way through building it (and who I later founded a company with).
/10: Years later, much of the money we raised years later for @Cluster could be traced back to relationships that formed in one way or another because of this little project.
/10: Looking back, I could have easily talked myself out of building this. No revenue potential. No real DAUs. High server costs (my horrible engineering led to inefficient data storage). But I built it as a learning experience anyway, and figured it’d make a few people happy.
/10: It taught me.. • People like sharing interesting projects. • You have total control over making yourself relevant. • Offer value before asking for value. • Relationships formed in a genuine way pay off in the long-term. • Never be afraid to put yourself out there.
This was super useful and inspirational. Good on you for doing something you enjoyed on your own and it naturally led you to build awesome relationships.
