Most of what we define as design problems are actually storytelling problems.

Because the barriers to creating effective solutions to stated problems are often the myths and stories that people in power use to retain power, or that the less powerful find comforting.

This came to mind yet again this morning when I saw some researchers in a Slack group discussing how to reduce what they'd learned to a quantitative metric acceptable to managers. Learning and measuring are not intersubstitutable.

So much more effort seems to go into fabricating things to measure, instead of talking about what's really meaningful.

How you communicate with the members of your team determines what you are capable of creating. Basic Conway's Law stuff. But everyone is obsessed with tools and measurements.

The obsession with tools and measurements is related to the false notion that anything delivered over the internet should be considered as "technology" foremost. This also short-circuits critique, reinforcing the sense that only technologists can criticize digital stuff.

Of the bazillion food delivery services, will the two that ultimately persist win out because of their superior coding?

Food delivery apps and rideshare apps are the most solved digital design problems. And yet there are so many stories about them BECAUSE it's actually all about the scheming and deal making. Welcome to the great reintermediation.

Storytelling promotes information coherence -- the narrative has to make sense to almost anyone, and gaps are much easier to spot. Narratives are one of the simplest forms of knowledge structures, tribal in nature.https://empathy.guru/fundamental-set-of-knowledge-structures/ …

And storytelling is one of the only ways to convey emotion, which is a critical element at determining what’s meaningful or not.

Yes! I’ve been framing design as analogs to the science and art of story. E.g., I don’t like the UX/UI acronym, but when I do need to talk about it, using @LisaCron ‘s definition of story vs plot, I say UI=plot (what happens) and UX=story (how someone feels about what happens).

And making that connection opens up our design practice and other related work to the insanely long history and maturity of story methods and practice. Based on my experience, the feature animation film pipeline and process is particularly applicable.
