Trust me, I’m probably more American than you. I live in Texas, own a ranch🐮, own guns, have six kids, tried for years to get into the AirForce (bad heart 😭), I built a 🇺🇸 mask factory here because I wanted jobs here & not just in 🇨🇳 I’ve voted Libertarian I was 18. 🧵 3/17

It’s 50 degrees warmer than average in the arctic now, and 70 degrees warmer in Antarctica. 50 degrees warmer than average in March in New York City would be 102F. 70 degrees warmer than average in Rio right now would be 155F.

Oof. I know we invoke comparisons to Hitler way too often, but given Bolsonaro's publicly-stated aims, isn't this just a little like Hitler getting a medal for protecting Jews?

Hi That's a doozy of a thread. You were kind enough to post the whole thing as a comment on our website, so, as promised, I've responded point-by-point. I probably won't be making rash promises like that again :)

I think this says "If the ministry made some basic, standard logistics changes, textbooks would get through to kids." Did I get it wrong? And if I did, the RCT was because....?

"A randomized evaluation from Kenya showed that providing textbooks did not raise average test scores, possibly because textbooks were written in English, which is a third language for most students, making it difficult for them to use textbooks."

I'm going to start a collection of RCTs that make me laugh and/or cry. Here's one:

I'll be the first to say this ain't easy - our own portfolio is a work in progress. But doers and funders oughta be - and increasingly are - in common cause on this. That's what it's gonna take to get some serious change around here. 17/17

If, as a funder, I don't hold myself accountable, I'm a bad funder. If I don't hold doers accountable, I'm doing them and their putative beneficiaries a disservice. Good doers already hold themselves accountable. 16/n

Every black-belt organization I know is doing some version of this approach, including the one whose results I criticized (and my criticism was mostly at about an unjustified hype-fest). 15/n

It's impossible to make a fool-proof case for lasting behavior. A zillion things can go wrong. But: With 1) a hard, systematic look at the logic, 2) a working knowledge of incentives and human behavior (so many resources nowadays)... 13/n

A CASE FOR LASTING CHANGE. Impact comes from behavior change - someone does something differently. We look for a persuasive case that the impact-driving behavior will be maintained over time. 10/n
