What version of Firefox? In general the Apple-Google duopoly is meant to deprive others of the opportunity to achieve the same performance. So while the perf will never be equal, it sounds like you might be suffering from this bug:

Might be but this isn’t fullscreen. Chrome also has very high cpu for the same test

Do you see this on every video? If you check "Stats for Nerds" is the same codec and resolution being used in Firefox and Safari? It could be that YouTube is serving AV1 to Firefox and Chrome and VP9 to Safari.

Okay this definitely seems to be the issue. On most videos I tried Safari is getting served VP9 and the others are getting AV1. I found one video where they all get VP9 for some reason and CPU usage is much lower but still way higher than Safari (FF was 30% vs 8% for Safari)
