again do people think "take vacant houses (most of which are between tenants) and give them gratis to homeless people" is a solution to housing problems in markets like san francisco?pic.twitter.com/3d7ngtXPMT

frankly you don't even have to spend 5 minutes to figure out why the "more vacant homes than homeless people" talking point is stupid! people are being intentionally stupid about it because they don't like the solutions to the actual problem.https://twitter.com/TribTowerViews/status/1417218120851214351 …

can't help but love the smugness of this argument from people that have clearly spent about 5 minutes thinking about this issue

right it's also like, how would you implement this? "raise everyone's taxes dramatically in order to buy whatever house is on the market and give it away to a homeless person" would be the least politically popular proposal in historyhttps://twitter.com/tobyhardtospell/status/1417218966334820367 …

I've heard several times there isn't really a housing shortage bc there's more vacant units than homeless. I support buying units for homeless housing, but that isn't what a shortage is. A shortage is when demand outstrips supply so much landlords can set exorbitant prices.

No, see you pair this with hard-capped universal rent control (never mind that THAT'S illegal in California) and then just... hope no one ever needs to move ever again or have a decades long waiting list for units in desirable areas or somethinghttps://twitter.com/whstancil/status/1417219719275372552 …

I mean you can just take the homelessness thing out of it; you’re effectively reducing the housing supply to solve a problem that has no bearing on housing costs, so, uh, what do you think that’s gonna do to housing prices folks

Correct. The number of people who are at-this-moment experiencing homelessness is only a fraction of the people who will be experiencing homelessness at some point in the next few years!https://twitter.com/LibArtsNdCrafts/status/1417220989109288960 …

It also fundamentally misunderstands the problem because it treats "homeless people" as a stock, rather than "homelessness" as a flow.

I mean, if anything, the reactionary-captured courts are dramatically expanding what constitutes a taking, but "the complete and uncompensated seizure of real property by the government" has always been extremely illegal.

Right, among many, many problems with this, if you are giving homeless people assets worth ~$1M, how do you determine who is a *real* homeless person, vs someone who had other options and decided to live on the street for a while to get the free house?https://twitter.com/tobyhardtospell/status/1417221802980347918 …

Street homelessness is the tip of the iceberg of the housing crisis, and ideally we shouldn't have housing policy that crushes poor people only to provide those that fall into homelessness with a free room.

Just to address this very common objection: "Condos kept as permanently vacant money laundering assets" is a real phenomenon but are unfortunately a tiny percentage of total vacant units and not nearly enough to solve the housing shortage.https://twitter.com/NeedsMoreInput/status/1417229932116119562 …

They are dwarfed by "units that are vacant because they are in between renters or owner occupiers" and "units that are vacant because they would require expensive repairs to become safely habitable." It would be rad to seize all the zombie condos! There's just not nearly enough.

It's kind of a tricky thing to regulate out but the thing about global capital is that it's mobile so just putting a little pressure on the oligarch cash can be enough to at least displace some of it to a new market (as seemingly happened in Vancouver, BC)https://twitter.com/Twonius/status/1417233220505059330 …

yeah there's also places where this happens but you just end up with people renting out a whole house to one guy on a short term lease to prevent seizure. Dutch Anti-kraak is the example that springs to mind

The market creates the housing problems. Eliminate the market and just get houses to people. Doing otherwise is just a handout to selected investors at the expense of everybody in the city.
