The reason this discourse is annoying is that the implication is that 1) the "vacant homes" are empty money laundering properties (very few are) 2) seizing them and distributing them gratis to homeless people is a workable solution (it isn't) 3) no new building is necessary https://twitter.com/RottenInDenmark/status/1405582100347056128 …

It's such an appealing story because it neatly resolves the cognitive dissonance for rich kid gentrifier leftists who inherited their liberal suburban parents' neighborhood defender politics but need to maintain a superficial concern for the homeless and for minority communities

We can acknowledge 1) the empty investor owned condo is a real phenomenon, 2) it has a negative impact on the housing costs in cities where it happens and 3) even in those cities, solving it would not come close to solving the overall housing costs issuehttps://twitter.com/ScottMadin/status/1405588985846677515 …

There was just a segment on the radio yesterday, on WBUR of all things, about the purported catastrophic effect of high-dollar luxury apartments in downtown Boston being bought by foreign billionaires to sit empty as investments or tax dodges or whatever https://twitter.com/mtsw/status/1405587256941764608 …

You see YIMBYs go the other way and deny these exist which is both factually wrong and losing rhetorical tactic because then defeating your argument only requires finding a few anecdotes of the phenomenon occurring, which is not difficult!

Yes. The underlying truth of both issues is that the USA is the most prosperous nation in history and there's no material necessity for anyone to be hungry or homeless, the problem is the framing of this observation argues against the effective remedieshttps://twitter.com/Maxsimile/status/1405589944035418116 …

It’s like saying there is more than enough food for everyone who’s hungry, then suggesting hungry people should go have dinner in an Iowa cornfield.

Yes, in fact plenty of people who do not have a legal residence do squat in abandoned housing in Baltimore and it's not exactly a wonderful situation for them even if it probably beats sleeping in a tent or under a bridge.https://twitter.com/oftenveryvile/status/1405591281250807813 …

Baltimore, for example, has a ton of vacant houses but many (most?) of those are in such a terrible state that making them livable would likely cost nearly as much as building new housing. You really couldn’t just seize them, move people in, and declare victory.

Correct. Taxes on long-term vacancies either generate no-cost revenue or they prompt owners to put units back into occupancy. It's free real estate!https://twitter.com/mmathog/status/1405594984976240640 …

Also the remedy for when super rich people do just leave fancy condos empty is to address it directly via tax/legal systems not to freaking not build housing.

I see some empty buildings and empty lots in the so called inner cities, but even them that would require investment in infrastructure, right?

Yes, in Philadelphia people are always clamoring to rebuild the vacant blocks instead of 'insert gentrified area' but even if you put a ton of great housing there people want to live near things.

As an AML professional, I always laugh at the talking point of how many empty homes are being used for laundering. It’s just…not how most people launder money anyway
