two of the weirdest things about living abroad is seeing things that are *actually* old, and explaining to others that in the US mainly anything older than like a 100 yrs is a notable attraction in the area, esp in states that experienced a boom in development over the last 50yrs

when I was an undergrad at berkeley, they had to renovate the physics building at a higher cost than it would have taken to knock it down and replace it because it was on the national register of historic landmarks

I realize that's not quite the same thing but every actual physicist was in favor of knocking it down and replacing it even if it did have the original room where the cyclotron was built in it (it was not in any way a special room)
