It really has changed in the last 40 years which makes me suspect that it has more to do with stranger danger and child abduction panics than with automobiles, though it'd be better for my narrative if that weren't the case.

This was literally the reason I had to move out of Brooklyn. Taking a stroller on public transportation was a nightmare. It was so difficult that my wife had to give up her job because taking the baby to daycare was too hard, and she ended up essentially being a recluse.

One of the big things that struck me when I was reading James Howard Kunstler years ago is how this chauffeuring culture has robbed our kids of knowing anything about the town they live in or how to get around in it.

It seems like it's happened faster than that. I grew up in a San Diego suburb in the 80s where is what the norm that elementary kids rode themselves to school. FFS I had a job at 11 delivering papers by bike. It's the last 30 years that we took this from kids. What happened?
