Getting Started in Automated Game Design - a tutorial about the past, present and future of using AI to design games, as well as discussions about labour, creativity, society, and practical lessons from 10 years of making things that make things. 💜 🎥

The text 'Getting Started in Automated Game Design' next to a picture of me, surrounded by various characters from research projects, as well as a painting of Rembrandt and UK politician Peter Mandelson poking his head over the corner of the image.

Finally got a chance to dig into 'A Narrowing Of AI Research?' by Klinger, and Stathoulopoulos - it's a fantastic paper about why diversity of ideas in research is vital, and how AI research may be narrowing due to corporate competition.

Been walking past this magnolia tree (almost) every day for the past few weeks. Spring is good.

There are so many good bits to pull out of the introduction and literature review alone, a lot of fascinating studies about the different incentives that guide researchers and private labs, and the very real consequences they have for the whole of society. Great read.

Is there anything stopping people from publishing reviews of their own work online? I've often thought this might be useful for various reasons, especially helping new students. I can't think of a reason why it wouldn't be okay, but I can imagine people maybe being uncomfortable?

Incredibly, even this huge effort is stymied by DOTA 2 itself - you need to play *thirty* regular games of DOTA 2 before you can download a custom game, meaning you can't play this tutorial as soon as you install the game. They're hoping to get Valve to bypass this.

I've not had a chance to look at it yet, but I'm quite impressed at the DOTA 2 community banding together to fund, design, test and translate a DOTA 2 tutorial all on their own. It's bizarre this was never done officially, properly.

Guardian homepage this morning will make a great case study for future media studies classes - a masterclass in manufacturing consent. Look at the state of it.

Not asking for advice. This is an important thread on the structural problems of and how they need to fix those issues before editors like me, Mar, and our students can successfully add important information to articles.

Yesterday the demoscene was accepted as UNESCO cultural heritage. That's a great success for the recognition of digital art and digital culture in general! But what is the demoscene? A thread:

here's a little secret for people who think codes of conduct hurt reputations/discourse/etc: the things we all do are what shape those things. the code of conduct just helps communities negotiate together and decide how to respond.

I need a few more people to participate in my dissertation experiment about level design techniques in open-world games. If you would like to help me out please shoot me a DM 🎮 (Must have experience playing Assassin‘s Creed and no level designers who work in the industry, sorry)
