After every mass shooting there’s sermonizing about how media shouldn’t give excess publicity to the perpetrator because copycats, etc. But nothing ever changes. Maybe it’s time to admit that America will always be perversely fascinated by the people who commit gruesome actspic.twitter.com/q4mGU0wxqM

It should be admitted insofar as the public appetite for information about perpetrators clearly seems to be overriding other considerations

Yes, to some extent it’s a chicken or the egg type question. But as things stand, perverse fascination of this kind suffuses the entire culture.

in the most general context, the interest in information about potential dangers is not particularly abnormal or unhealthy. like, hurricane's coming! but hurricanes don't copycat... or do they (sort of)? why do people continue to reside where hurricanes are regular events?

so answers to that may be job requirement, other economic inhibitors, family roots, "been meaning to move but..." so maybe there are inhibitors to more proactive remedies to school/other shooters, and the copycat issue arises in some part from their absence.

This brand of media handwringing is right up there with "how do you tell your children about..." framing. Your children? They know about it. Report everything, especially all the stuff you somehow never got around to. News is not a depletable resource. Room for everything.

Every single media person who participates in mass media but desires the infantilization of the public is completely full of shit: the world is full of atrocity, most of it is downplayed by these very same fuckers. They don't humanize everybody now to begin with, not even close.

Ratings/views = money. Money = The point. Media isn’t doing a job to serve the public or do what’s right. They’re doing business.
