"Violent video games" obviously shouldn't be banned but it's weird that people get so offended at the suggestion that immersing in hyper-realistic first-person shooters for 9 hours a day from early childhood onward might have an adverse psychological impact on a tiny % of players

ok but that's like saying "drinking milk doesn't cause school shootings but it could in an infinitesimally small minority" it is totally meaningless and this is why statistical significance exists.
-
With regard to mass killing perpetrators, the sample size is so small that you can't extrapolate any statistically significant inferences.

In which case you have no proof that it was the games unless games were the only influence they had. No family. No school. No social influence. Sorry but that's a totally specious argument.

I personally find the explanation put forth in 'Going Postal' by Mark Ames to be a better explanation for mass shootings in USA.

I think the point is that those same people would be triggered to act regardless of media consumption. They could turn Big Bird and Mr Rodgers into symbols of hate to rationalize their behavior.

I think boiling certain things down to an irreducible reason is an issue too. LOL at leftists who want a more cooperative society but think hyper competitive, militaristic games in isolation, and being socialized away from intimacy / immediacy is NBD.

that same infinitesimally small minority are also NOT gamers.... there is no statistical connection between these populations. rethink this track

The infinitesimal minority must be weighed in trade off against the extreme high majority who show inverse statistical correlation. Through decades. Notwithstanding the fact that it is probably increased education levels that is the most important cause for reduced homicides.

We can never know that. This is speculation either way. So permanent empirical uncertainty then?

much more likely that psychopaths would enjoy same games, movies in a different way

It would be interesting to see who paid for those studies. It doesn’t make good business sense to fund research that doesn’t support their corporate/industry goals. Sadly there are few truly unbiased sources available. $$ often leads the way to corruption.

If they were, whatever was going on would have already been going on (and could have been exacerbated by the video games.) The games wouldn't have been the sole cause.

This is not a strong argument

Important point: young people play video games quite a bit in Western Europe. What's the difference? Some have easy access to destructive weapons.

I am sorry but what? If you are letting your kid play Hyper realistic first person shooters for 9 hours a day from an early age maybe what we should legistlate on is responsible parenting. We see a correlation between number of guns and number of school shootings mate.
-
You cant just legislate on the off-chance that videogames or movies affect users on a negative way even though studies at every level are pointing otherwise pretty much on every single respectable instance on the past decade. Keep the conversation about gun control.
