"Violent video games" obviously shouldn't be banned but it's weird that people get so offended at the suggestion that immersing in hyper-realistic first-person shooters for 9 hours a day from early childhood onward might have an adverse psychological impact on a tiny % of players

This coming from someone who played way too much Halo and Medal of Honor as an adolescent. Analyzing the societal effect of a relatively new phenomenon (ubiquity of such games) doesn't amount to condemnation of any given game-playing individual

I'm aware that studies have repeatedly shown no correlation between violent games and real-world violence. Still, doesn't preclude the possibility that an infinitesimally small minority (say, 5 people per year who attempt to carry out mass shootings) were adversely influenced

A study like that doesn't preclude the possibility that a infinitesimal fraction of players might incur deleterious psychological effects.

If TPTB were serious about games & precaution, they would say *ok, we don’t know yet, let’s dial down the violence before it’s a product on the market.* Ok, let’s study it to show it’s safe. (Can’t prove a negative.) Ok, depending on outcome, proceed.

Yes, it might be exceedingly difficult to quantify and can't conceivably be acted on, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

There may not be a direct link with violence but kids I work with often get aggro, possessive, like addicts when cut off. I feel I’ve seen some decline. The choice to do this has an opportunity cost - not building communication, social development.

I think people get annoyed since it’s been a 20+ year talking point and the correlation just isn’t there. There are asian / euro countries that play just as much or more per capita violent video games and it doesn’t seem to have any relation to gun violence.

A general correlation with violence can not exist, while at the same time an infinitesimally small faction of players can incur adverse psychological impacts. No contradiction there.

There's no generalized correlation but that doesn't preclude the possibility that an infinitesimal minority -- like the 5-10 people per year who seek to commit mass shootings -- incurred adverse psychological impacts from the games.

Negative reaction probably stems from an understanding that politicians love grabbing a minor issue that only affects a low voting constituency and using it to signal their political efficacy.

Most major game companies stopped licensing gun names after Sandy Hook, and the vast majority of smaller developers just use generic names. The bigs like EA backed off in 2013.

it's usually not said in a vacuum it's usually said in a "no limits on guns, what other freedoms should we curtail" context after a shooting which probably explains why people are offended

Does it need to be directly connected to mass shootings to be considered? Could the stifling effects of games & technology impacting: success in traditional classrooms, communication skills & relationships, & 10,000 hrs spent in isolation by age 21 enough to create misanthropy?

I think it's combo of both. https://www.newsreview.com/sacramento/killing-game/content?oid=31755 … "“I have to laugh when someone says, ‘Oh, the people playing these games know it’s not real,’” said Dr. Peter Vorberer, a clinical psychologist and head of the University of Southern California’s computer game research group."

Maybe it's the absolute FAILURE of our system to present young people with a future full of anything but debt, fear and crushing anxiety? Or that the concept of Decency or Mercy don't exist in our Society and earn you ridicule, just for mentioning them?

As if the constant media bombardment of wars and cops shooting people has less impact than GTA. Just maybe these kids immerse themselves in fiction because their reality sucks. Is it that different than reading novels about war/violence or watching movies?
