Quinn Norton has written insightfully on all manner of subjects for years. People who first became aware of her two hours ago rendered immediate furious judgment based on a trivial snippet of what she’s done, and NYT immediately acquiesced to their demands. Not a healthy dynamic

There are plenty of people locked up in jail because they made one mistake in their entire lives. No Michael, Quinn doesn't get to fail upwards this time.

And those people (in large part) deserve mercy / forgiveness / understanding. What a weird rationale for why it's good that petty, irrational vengeance should be exacted on somebody else.

Thank you,,,,she deserves better. Society can be good,,,,but can also unfairly cruel. It was like burning at the the stake. Character assassination of some one misjudged.

The same fate should've happened to Brett Stephens and a bunch of others at the Times.

Hey, maybe they could have checked her social media presence, before offering the job? When the Internet does better due diligence than your background checks, your background checks suck.

I can see why you like her - Aaron Swartz, technology. Working for public / public interest - that kind of thing wouldn’t have hired someone here on if discovered in advance. Social media reflects employer now. Climate denier neocons like Stephens might be more dangerous imho.

I personally loathe (what feels like a hobby) of dragging when it’s to a disproportionate level too. it can be nasty & visibility creates a bias that we in fact are the problem. But elite conservatives who preach free speech tend to wax about discourse when they get pushback.

Then this is a problem with the NYT's PR department, and not the people pointing out her flaws. There is no shortage of great people who have been doing great work about privacy, tech, etc.

People who call people days should not be writing opinion journalism.

Michael, young lad, have you heard the tale of the Great McGregor? Goes a wee bit like this. A man walked into a bar in Scotland & ordered a drink. Next to him was a wrinkled old Scotsman, well into the bottle in front of him. The man asked the Scotsman what was the matter?/1
